Permanent resident card applications and renewals use the same 50 × 70 mm format as a Canadian passport photo. The details are easy to get wrong, so here is what to prepare.
PR Card Photo Specifications
- Size: 50 mm wide × 70 mm high (2 × 2¾ inches)
- Face height: chin to crown 31–36 mm
- Copies: two identical photos
- Background: plain white or light-coloured
- Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed
- Age: taken within the last 6 months
Photographer Information on the Back
One of the two photos must carry the photographer's information on the back. Not every application also needs a guarantor signature, so read your application form before the photo session and tell the photographer exactly what to write.
Common Reasons PR Card Photos Are Returned
- Wrong dimensions, such as the 35 × 45 mm visa size
- Face too large or too small in the frame
- Shadows, patterns or a coloured background
- Glare on glasses, or a smile or open mouth
- Photos edited or filtered after they were taken
Check the Size Before You Submit
Use the tool on this page with the Canada PR Card preset to confirm the crop, face height and background. For the full rule set, read the Canada passport photo requirements guide, and confirm the final details on the official IRCC website.
