Applying for a visitor visa, study permit or work permit? The photo you upload to the IRCC portal follows a different format from a Canadian passport photo. Wrong dimensions are a frequent cause of processing delays, so check the size before you submit.
Canada Visa Photo Size
- Size: 35 mm wide × 45 mm high
- Face height: chin to crown 31–36 mm
- Background: plain white or light-coloured, with clear contrast
- Expression: neutral, eyes open, mouth closed
- Age: taken within the last 6 months
The 50 × 70 mm format belongs to the passport, PR card and citizenship photo. See our Canada passport photo requirements for that format.
Posture and Lighting
Face the camera straight on with your head level and shoulders square. Use even light from the front so there are no shadows on your face or the background. Keep your whole head visible, including the top of your hair.
Glasses and Head Coverings
Glasses are accepted when your eyes are fully visible and the lenses show no glare. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not. Head coverings worn for religious or medical reasons are allowed if your full face, from chin to forehead, stays visible.
Check Your Photo Before You Upload
Use the tool on this page with the Canada Visa (35 × 45 mm) preset. It crops to the correct size, checks the face height and background, and flags problems before you submit. Always compare the result with the latest instructions on the IRCC website, since requirements can change.
